TURRAH LYRIC BLOG
Turrah is a song Ali and I have had in the slow cooker for a long time and over the course of its production its meaning has changed a lot. We were initially inspired by glass animals' style of writing pop with a human touch, something sentimental and personal while also being relatable. Also the charm of having a poppy chorus and back-beat was something that seemed very attractive to indulge in. After releasing songs like Petrichor/Dorian, a chilled arms in the air, almost urban type song, was something we had been experimenting with on demos in the studio for a while. To pair that kind of glass animals, modern pop vibe with this song, just felt perfect.
The main hook of the song was inspired by a co-worker who often said Ta-ra as I left the building and as she's Liverpudlian the inflection she added ended up making it sound like Turrah, which I love so much that we deliberately spelt it phonetically.
The verses are sort of based on a song the Rolling Stones wrote called "Mother's Little Helper", where women become increasingly pressured by their husbands and kids. I've seen this in my own mother before, so to honour that I named the woman in the verses "Martha" as a sort of nod to that, while not necessarily committing to the maternal identity; it could be about anyone. The song at its core is about saying goodbye to what you've known your whole life and striving for something better.
Hopefully you all enjoy this song as our first bit of music back after however long.
